The FDA has recently asked pharmaceutical manufacturer Eli Lilly & Co. to add a new warning to the popular schizophrenia drug Zyprexa, notifying patients that Zyprexa has been linked to diabetes and other blood sugar disorders. In a recent study, Zyprexa and two other atypical anti-psychotics that are used to treat schizophrenia, were found to cause diabetes approximately 50 percent more often than older drugs.

On February 4, 2005, the Canadian law firm of Stevenson & Associates announced a class action against Eli Lilly & Company and Eli Lilly Canada Inc., the makers and distributors of Zyprexa, and sought damages for their client of $900,000,000.00 (900 million dollars). According to the firm's press release, this action has been brought on behalf of all persons in Canada who were prescribed the drug Zyprexa and who eventually became diabetic as a result of taking that drug. 

Their particular claim has been brought on behalf of the plaintiff, Andrea Heward who was prescribed Zyprexa and subsequently was diagnosed as diabetic. It is alleged that she became diabetic as a result of having been prescribed Zyprexa. She is now unable to work and is under constant medical care. The lawyers for the plaintiff, Harvin Pitch, counsel to Stevenson & Associates and Colin Stevenson intend to work with law firms across Canada and the United States in pursuing this claim and other similar claims against the manufacturers and distributors of Zyprexa, Eli Lilly & Company and Eli Lilly Canada Inc.
