Tuesday, March 10, 2009Brawl Breaks Out at HS Basketball Game, Cops Use Mace to Break It Up These brawls at high school basketball games are getting so common, school officials should just plan for them and end the games at half time and hand out mace to all the teachers. This latest incident could have been worse: one of the teens arrested had a handgun fall out of his pants during the melee. Oops! Here's more from the Star Tribune:St. Paul police arrested a student for possession of a stolen firearm and ticketed a 17-year-old for disorderly conduct after a fight broke out Saturday at a showcase basketball game at Arlington High School.
The Twin City Championship pitted St. Paul Johnson against Minneapolis Washburn.
Police spokesman Pete Crum said Monday that the melee involved fans from both sides and required about 20 officers to quell. A chemical irritant was used, he said, and officers had to work to separate parents and children from the combatants.
An 18-year-old man who identified himself as a Highland Park High School student was arrested after a gun fell out of his waistband during a struggle with police, Crum said. He had not threatened anyone with the weapon, he added.Labels: high school basketball
Tuesday, February 24, 2009Dad Punches Referee at YMCA League Basketball Game We've said it before and we'll say it again: adults are ruining youth sports. Latest case in point comes to us from Colorado Springs where the father of a teen-aged basketball player was upset over a call made by a referee during a YMCA league game, argued with the official and then punched him in the face several times.
Here's more from KRDO (link includes video clip):A Y-M-C-A league basketball game turns violent after a parent punches a referee in the face. The parent, Steven Vaughn, was arrested around noon Saturday for third degree assault. Police say Vaughn was upset over a call made by referee Alvin Miller and punched him in the face multiple times.
Vaughn was asked to leave the game, but a verbal fight continued in the parking lot when the game ended. Vaughn was arrested for third degree assault. Miller suffered minor injuries and didn't require any medical attention.
Miller has been a youth basketball referee for nine years and said he has only seen an attack on a referee twice. "A few years back a parent jumped on a referee at a game at St. Mary's," he said. "I've seen it in this town where parents approach officials, pointing in their face, cussing at them, trying to start a fight."
Miller tells NEWSCHANNEL 13 the player was given two technical cards for cussing and thrown out of the game. Police say that's when Vaughn approached Miller and punched him several times. "He hit me a few times but I broke free and called police."Labels: bad parents, high school basketball

Friday, February 20, 2009Latest HS Basket-Brawl: G.W. Carver and Valley High School - Alabama It's that time of year when high school basketball games start getting a little more heated, the fans get a little more rowdy and the brawls--both on and off the court--get more common. here's more from USA Today (video clip below):School officials are investigating after a big brawl broke out during a high school basketball playoff game in Montgomery. The fight cleared the benches of both G.W. Carver and Valley High schools and halted the semifinal game.
The Central Regional Tournament of the Alabama High School Athletic Association game was being played at the Alabama State University Acadome on Tuesday afternoon.
Valley's Enrique Florence fouled Carver's Roquez Johnson with 6:23 remaining in the fourth quarter. Johnson shoved Florence and both benches emptied.
Fans poured out of the stands onto the court. Police ended fights on the court but more erupted in the stands.Labels: brawl, high school basketball
Tuesday, February 10, 2009High School Basketball Game Suspended After Fan Punches Player It seems to be the season of high school basket-brawl games, with parents and fans streaming out of the stands to assault other fans and players. The latest: from the State of Washington where the KingCo 4A Crest Division boys basketball game between Redmond and fourth-ranked Garfield turned ugly. Here's more from the Seattle Times:In a bizarre scene, a Redmond High School senior charged out of the stands and punched Garfield player De'Andre Taylor in the face, spurring punches from both sides as the two teams and fans had to be separated.
The Redmond student who threw the punch reacted to a collision and verbal exchange between Taylor and Redmond player Max Wisman in a game where opposing fans traded derisive chants. Referees had stopped the action to separate the two players when the student ran onto the floor.
The Garfield bench emptied and eight Bulldogs were ejected by referees for leaving the bench area and coming onto the floor in the mayhem. With Garfield leading 50-33, the game was suspended with 5:26 remaining.
School officials, referees and coaches huddled for 15 minutes before concluding the safest thing was to suspend the game.
"We just felt it was too hostile of an environment here, and it created a safety concern for everybody," said Redmond athletic direct John Appelgate. "Garfield was going to be finishing the game with four [actually three] players, because of players leaving the bench. What we've agreed to do is suspend the game, send in video and go with whatever decision WIAA [Washington Interscholastic Activities Association] makes. I've never seen anything like this in my life."Labels: brawl, high school basketball
Monday, February 09, 2009Players Upset With Coach, Walk Out at Halftime of Game How upset would you have to be with the coach of your HS basketball team to quit DURING a game? Apparently about half the team at Springer High School in Texas felt that a bullying situation had not been addressed, so they walked out at halftime and quit. Here's more from KXII:Students and parents at Springer High School are frustrated with school administrators, and the how slow they are to respond to complaints that bullying is occurring at their school. A group of students who were all members of the Girls Basketball team until a few nights ago, sat down with our own Daniel Armbruster to express their displeasure.
They say that the head coach of the girls basketball team, Robert Bradley, along with one of his players have bullied them over the course of the last 2 years. A sign above the front door at Springer Schools reads "Welcome to our school. Where no child is left behind." But, if you ask some students and parents, they might disagree.
"He belittles them...he cusses at them," said Jamie Frasier, a concerned parent. She and others say Coach Bradley treats most of his team poorly. In fact at half-time of their game on Thursday, nearly half of his players got up and walked out. "We don't just walk away for nothing there has to be something wrong," said Chelsea Whitfield, one of the players who walked out.
The concerned students and parents say they disagree with the way that Coach Bradley and Principal Brenda Foster have allowed several bullying situations between one teammate and the rest of the team to go unnoticed.Labels: high school basketball
Wednesday, February 04, 2009Caught on Tape: Scorekeepers Brawl During High School Basketball Game Not sure if we've ever had a scorekeeper brawl on this site before, much less one caught on tape, but this one happened at the Watertown (Mass.) versus Lexington High School basketball game. Just watch the upper right-hand corner of the screen, where the Watertown scorekeeper, left, opens his water bottle and just flips it toward the face of the Lexington scorekeeper. The Lexington scorekeeper then stands up and punches him.Labels: high school basketball, scorekeepers
Tuesday, January 27, 2009High School Basketball Players Arrested for Theft DURING Game My guess is, if you're a HS basketball coach and the cops show up, DURING A GAME, and arrest a couple of your star players, that's likely to mess with your game plan. We feel sorry for the coach at Lovejoy High School (IL) who had to sit there and watch as police arrested two of his players, Damion J. Boyd, 19, and Jimmie L. Clark, 18, while they were playing in Litchfield Invitational Basketball Tournament.
According to police the duo stole five IPods and some cash from players on the Civic Memorial High School team, which shared a locker room with Lovejoy High during the tournament. The Civic players reported the thefts after they came back to the locker room and Lovejoy took the court for their game. Police found four of the five missing IPods, some how did the whole CSI thing and managed to link the stolen items to the two Lovejoy players. At that point, the marched out on the court while the game was in progress and arrested Boyd and Clark.
Not surprisingly, Litchfield High School defaulted Lovejoy from the tournament field. (Journal News)Labels: high school basketball, locker room
Tuesday, January 13, 2009Fans Rush Floor at High School Basketball Game . . . During Game! Kids:
Here's a tip from your Uncle Bob. If you want to rush the field at a football game, or the floor of a basketball game at your high school, best to wait until the game is OVER. Otherwise, the adults involved will not be happy and your ass will likely be arrested.
That's apparently what happened in Fulton County, Kentucky during a game last week between Fulton County High School and Fulton City High School (and you know how heated THAT old rivalry is!). About one minute into the game, a Fulton City player was called for technical foul, a fan allegedly struck a Fulton City player (we're assuming FC COUNTY fan, but you never know) and then more than 60 fans rushed the floor. Cops were called, the gym was cleared and the game--thankfully--was suspended.
So far, three teens have been arrested: Tony Udley Jr., Kiara Bogan and Marissa Joy. So, wait . . . of the more than 60 people who were involved in this brawl, two of the three people arrested were teen aged girls? Something strikes me as strange about that, but then again it is Kentucky.
Anyone suspect that moonshine is involved? (Fort Mill Times)Labels: high school basketball
