Tuesday, September 01, 2009HS Football Star Leaves School Early to Start Football Career at College, Gets Arrested Twice in Five Months, Gets Kicked Off Team Is this a story for our times? Imagine spending your whole young life working to be a quarterback at a major college football program, to the point that you would leave midway through your senior year to get a head start on spring practice. What happens when you get to college? Apparently for Blaine Dalton, who played less than a year ago for Blue Springs (Mo.) High School, the same thing that happens to a lot of young people at college: they start drinking and getting in trouble. Last week, Dalton was arrested for the second time since he arrived on campus last winter (this time for DUI) and was promptly sent home. Monday, January 19, 2009Arkansas Freshman Phenom Brandon Moore Arrested for DUI: But Whose Car Was He Driving? We're seeing a lot of reports of the drunk driving arrest of highly touted freshman forward Brandon Moore, but no one seems to be asking one very important question: Whose car/truck/SUV was he driving at the time of his arrest?
According to University of Arkansas cops, Moore crossed a double-yellow line to pass another vehicle, so they stopped the vehicle. The arresting officer claims Moore's breath smelled of alcohol and the Razorback admitted to drinking. After that, he failed a field sobriety test and later blew a 0.10% BAC (blood alcohol concentration) and was taken to jail. So far, that's not THAT unusual for a college athlete. But a few of the stories go on to say that Moore also faces a number of other charges, including reckless driving, no proof of insurance, failure to register a vehicle and unlawful use of dealer tags. Another report we read said he was also charged with "fictitious vehicle license or registration."It's those last couple of charges caught my attention: I can see a young person forgetting to insure his car, and maybe failing to register it in his new home state when he goes away to college (Moore is from New Orleans). . . but "unlawful use of dealer tags" and "fictitious vehicle license or registration?" A suspicious person might wonder if the vehicle (the reports don't say what kind, whether a '92 Toyota or a '09 Escalade) actually belonged to some other person--maybe a booster?--who, uh, loaned it to Moore. The only thing legit on the car would appear to the VIN. Maybe a reporter in Arkansas can do a little digging (unless UA has everyone in Fayetteville on a short lease there) and find out who it belonged to. Could be interesting or could be nothing, but you all want to know, don't you?Anyone think the NCAA might be interested in knowing that as well?Labels: drunk driving
Monday, January 12, 2009Charles Barkley Update: Legally Drunk at Time of Arrest, Blew .149% BACHere's the latest on the Sir Charles arrest for drunk driving back on December 31. According to police, test results released last week show that Barkley had a blood-alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit: .149%. Now, that's some drinking, but not nearly enough to make it into the Top Twenty of the BadJocks BAC Rankings. However, we may want to give Charles an Honorable Mention simply for the fact that he admitted to cops he was a on a quest for oral sex at the time of his arrest.
In addition, Barkley has temporarily stepped down from his color commentary work for TNT's coverage of NBA basketball games.
If convicted, Barkley faces between one to 10 days in jail, the suspension of driving privileges for 90 days, and a fine of $1,000 or more.
Interestingly, at .15% BAC, the punishments would have been much more severe. Not saying anyone fudged the results so that Barkley wouldn't face more jail time, but it is kinda strange that he's .001% under that level. At right, Charles Barkley's really, really sweaty mug shot. (People)Labels: Charles Barkley, drunk driving
Wednesday, January 07, 2009San Diego Chargers Reciever Arrested for DUI - Vincent Jackson Just days before a crucial playoff game, Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson was out driving at 2 am. Not that there's anything wrong with that if you're rushing a sick child to the hospital, but in this case, that doesn't appear to be what was going on. Jackson, who is already on probation for a previous DUI arrest, failed a field sobriety test, but so far we've not heard of any BAC for him. Naturally, at this time Jackson is saying he's completely innocent of the charges and is looking forward to his day in court to "clear his name." Translation:we'll plead guilty to something AFTER the playoffs are over cause the team needs me to have any chance of winning.
Here's more from The Star:Jackson failed sobriety tests shortly after 2 a.m. on state Route 52 in San Diego, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ray Scheidnes. He said he didn't know Jackson's blood-alcohol level. An officer stopped Jackson after spotting the player braking abruptly, speeding and weaving in a 2008 GMC Sierra, said Highway Patrol Officer Brad Baehr. Jackson was on probation for a previous DUI arrest, he said. The player was taken to the San Diego County jail and later released.
Jackson, in a brief statement released through the team, said he didn't think charges would be filed against him. "In the event they are, I look forward to clearing my name and proving my innocence," he said.Labels: drunk driving, San Diego Chargers
Tuesday, January 06, 2009High School Football Coach Arrested for DUI, Gives Cops Visa Card Instead of License No, there's nothing funny about drunk driving, but sometimes those arrested for DUI do funny things. Go ahead.Freedom football coach Marquel Blackwell, a former standout quarterback at USF and Dixie Hollins, was arrested early Monday morning in Tampa on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.
Blackwell, 29, was arrested by Tampa Police officers at 3:29 a.m. at the corner of Columbus Drive and Himes Avenue. According to the arrest report, after a traffic stop was conducted, Blackwell was asked to produce a drivers license. At that time, "he held out a blue Visa card."
Blackwell consented to field sobriety exercises, but "exhibited clues of impairment." He refused a blood alcohol test and was booked at 5:17 a.m. into the Orient Road jail. Blackwell, who was released Monday afternoon on $500 bond, could not be reached for comment.Labels: drunk driving

Here's more from the report by our friends at TheSmokingGun.com:Following his arrest earlier today for drunk driving, Charles Barkley told Arizona cops that he ran a stop sign because he was in a hurry to pick up a girl who had "given him a 'blow job' one week earlier," which the former NBA star described as "the best one he had ever had in his life." According to a Gilbert Police Department report, a copy of which you'll find here, police asked Barkley where he was going at the time of the 1:26 AM traffic stop in Scottsdale. "You want the truth?
