Holy Short Skirts Batman! UConn Boots Cheerleaders, Replaces Them With Robot "Spirit Squad"Okay, maybe they're not really cyborgs made to look like humans, but the new "spirit squad" created by the University of Connecticut sounds like their one and only job is to do the evil bidding of the administration. Their ONLY job. No stunts, no tumbling, no 30 foot human pyramids. None of that crap. Just get the fans in the stands and make them happy, got it? According to Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Student Activities (that's some bureaucratic job title, eh?) Christine "The Terminator" Wilson, the change was made because "We want people formerly called cheerleaders to focus in on building spirit at UConn, on spending time working on ways to engage fans and to really spread Husky spirit" rather than spend hours perfecting stunts. Oh, snap!
Sounds to us like someone in the Husky administration asked the boys and girls on the cheer squad to interact more with the fans (you remember, the ones who pay the bills for high priced college sports?) and were probably told that they didn't have the time because they were working on their routine for the National Cheer Offs (or whatever they're called). Not a good move gang. Said one teary former Husky cheerleader turned regular student, "They told us so late, I can't even buy like football season tickets now." Maybe they'll let you try out for the Spirit Squad next year? Wednesday, August 05, 2009How Much to Peek Into Your Facebook Account? 100 Million Dollars? Sure! Former HS Cheerleader Sues School & Coach for Passing Around Naughty Emails Found in Social Networking Site - A Mississippi teen says her right to privacy was violated when her cheerleading coach got into her Facebook account and read an email she wrote to another cheerleader that contained some profanity. How did the coach get into Mandi Jackson's account? With her username and password, of course, which the girl had turned over to the coach after she made the team. The coach had asked for that info from all the girls because she was told she had to monitor social networking sites. According to the lawsuit, after coach Tommie Hill read the e-mails, she suspended Jackson from cheering at football games and pep rallies. The real problem comes from the allegation that Hill disseminated content — including private messages with another Pearl High School student — from Jackson's account to other teachers, cheerleading coaches, and the principal and superintendent. And, somehow, that is now worth--with punitive damages--$100 million. Tuesday, May 12, 2009HS Cheerleader Refuses to Cheer for Player Who Allegedly Raped Her In many of the stories we come across here at BadJocks, we find that the high schools and colleges can be overly sensitive to the situation, over reacting and trying to hard to protect their "precious little snowflakes" as some refer to today's children. Then we have the case of the high school cheerleader at Silsbee High School in Texas who's known only as H.S.. H.S. has had a rough year: at a party last October, she claims three young men sexually assaulted her . . . including a member of the boy's basketball team.
The evidence against the attackers must have been slim because a grand jury refused to bring charges against the player, Rakheem Bolton, despite claims that there was evidence that he threatened to shoot the occupants of the house where the Oct. 19 party took place after the homeowner refused to return clothing recovered from the room where the assault allegedly occurred. Bolton also allegedly threatened a teacher at the school and, despite the sexual assault charges and alleged attendance at a party where alcohol was served remained on the basketball team. That's where the problem for the cheerleader, H.S. comes in.
According to a lawsuit filed on H.S.'s behalf by her parents, the cheerleading coach and school principal wrongly accused her of violating the "Cheerleaders' Constitution" (you know the one that starts "We the Cheerleaders . . . ) for failing to cheer for the entire basketball team. When, according to her family H.S. only refused to specifically cheer specifically for Bolton when he was shooting free throws. In the end, it sounds like H.S. was brought up on charges, so the family is now suing not on the school district, but also the DA who failed to bring charges against Mr. Bolton.
There are no good sides to this story, but it does seem like someone in authority could have handled this whole thing a lot better.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009HS Cheerleader Attacked After Game, Beaten by Girls From Rival School You know you go to a tough high school when the cheerleaders are brawling after the game. Here's more from the Ann Arbor News:A Pioneer High School cheerleader was attacked by four other students after a basketball game, according to Ann Arbor police reports. Officers were dispatched to the University of Michigan Medical Center emergency room for a reported assault on Friday night and encountered a 16-year-old girl with a swollen lip and injured leg.
The victim told police she was walking in the parking lot with her sister after the game finished bout 9:30 p.m. and was jumped by a female student she knew attended the Roberto Clemente Student Development Center. The assailant punched her in the face and another girl forced her to the ground by her hair, reports said.
Three or four girls surrounded her and began kicking her across her body, she said. She said a male friend intervened and pulled her from the crowd. The girls ran off but have been identified and are believed to be Ann Arbor residents between the ages of 15 and 17, reports said. The cause for the assault was unknown today.Labels: cheerleaders, high school basketball
Tuesday, February 17, 2009Schools: If HS Cheerleaders are Athletes They Should Be Drug Tested Cheerleaders at all levels have fought to earn the recognition that what they do requires physical skills, training and hours of practice just like any athletic endeavor and should be considered a sport. Recently courts and state athletic associations have been confirming that which makes the cheerleaders, well, cheer, but now they may not be so happy. Along with the perks of being called a sport comes the responsibility of being drug tested, just like all the other jocks at school.
Good thing or bad thing in your opinion? Leave your comments below.
Here's more on the story from the Fresno Bee:High school cheerleaders have argued for years that they're athletes -- just like football, baseball and basketball players. Cheerleaders do complex stunts, work out with weights, and practice from June to March.
Now cheerleaders in Visalia can prove their point: They're being tested for drugs. Under a school policy approved last month, cheerleaders must submit to the same random drug tests given to other student-athletes. It appears to be the first district in the central San Joaquin Valley to take this step.
Cheerleading coach Cara Carnahan at Mt. Whitney High welcomes the change. "You don't want your daughter being thrown into the air by anyone on drugs," Carnahan said. The change marks a big step toward recognizing cheerleaders as athletes, a status that has been denied them for a long time. "To me, cheerleading is a sport," said Redwood High cheer coach Lisa Bardonnex. "It's an evolving thing. Are we recognized as athletes? No."
It's annoying not to get more respect from peers for the physical skill of cheer squads, said sophomore Gianna Buldo, 15, a cheerleader at Redwood High.
The vexing question of what is an "activity" and what is "athletics" is a touchy subject, admits Drew Sorensen, area administrator for Visalia Unified. The state education code allows football players and other athletes -- but not cheerleaders -- to play a sport in lieu of taking state-required physical education classes.
Yet now the district is telling cheerleaders to prepare for random drug testing.
" 'You always said we're not athletes,' " Sorensen said, quoting a common refrain he's heard from cheerleaders.Labels: cheerleaders
Friday, January 23, 2009Male Cheerleading Coach Accused of Sex With Underage Girls Hmm, let's see . . . a 23-year-old male cheerleading coach, a room full of perky underage girls with daddy issues . . . what could possibly gone wrong here? A lot, apparently. Not a lot of details yet, but we're sure they will be coming out soon. Here's the story from the Hattiesburg American:A 23-year-old Sumrall man was arrested and charged with two counts of statutory rape and one count of child molestation. Zachary Riley, who coached cheerleading units at at least two area schools, was booked into the Lamar County Jail early Wednesday morning, Sheriff Danny Rigel said. Riley was scheduled to make his first appearance today in Lamar County Justice Court.
Details leading to the charges were unavailable Wednesday. Riley had worked on contract to teach routines to cheerleading squads at Purvis High and Presbyterian Christian School. Riley was not an employee of either school.Thursday, December 18, 2008Janitor Had Topless Pictures on Cell Phone of Four Middle School Cheerleaders If it was a card game, would a hand that included four topless pictures of middle school cheerleaders be considered four of a kind or a Royal Flush? Either way, a janitor Harding Middle School in Steubenville, Ohio got his hands a set of images that are going to cost him a bundle. Here's more from the State Journal:
Some disturbing new details are surfacing right now in a Steubenville courtroom involving the janitor who allegedly had nude pictures of students on his cell phone.
We are learning that all four of the pictures were naked cheerleaders exposing their tops.
Harding Middle School janitor Steven Decimone is charged with disseminating matter involving a juvenile. Detectives said that after confiscating his phone, it has been sent away and is under going testing to determine how the pictures got there. Decimone was suppose to be in court yesterday, but his attorney did not show up.Labels: cheerleaders, topless pictures
Tuesday, December 16, 2008Morton Ranch Cheerleader Hazing Update: Pair Placed on Diversion Plan Remember the cheerleader hazing case from last fall where girls on the JV squad were rounded up by the older girls, driven to one girl's home and then thrown into a swimming pool while blindfolded and their hands bound. Yeah, the parents of some of the victims were not so happy. If we're not mistaken, six or seven members of the varsity squad were suspended from school and then arrested on hazing charges. For two of them, the legal system is going to give them a slap on the wrist, allowing them to go on with their lives without a criminal record. Does that sound like a good compromise? Here's more from The Katy Times:Two Morton Ranch High School varsity cheerleaders charged for allegedly hazing junior varsity cheerleaders last summer were placed on one-year probation Friday. Harris County Court at Law No. 2 Judge Larry Standley approved a pretrial intervention agreement with the attorneys of Hayley Davis, 17, and Adelynn Garner, 18. According to the district attorney’s office, the agreement “could spare the former Morton Ranch High School cheerleaders from future criminal action on charges of hazing their junior colleagues.” As part of the agreement, the girls must complete at least 60 hours of community service, write a public letter of apology, obey all laws and voluntarily testify at any trials relating to the case. In exchange, prosecutors will dismiss their criminal case in December 2009.Labels: cheerleaders, hazing
