Headline of the Year: Coach Accused of Being a Pimp - We're sure coaches get called lots of colorful names . . . especially this time of year when football two-a-day practices are in full swing. But pimp? That's the word police in Maryland are using after they found a 15-year-old girl and an adult male engaged in a sex act at 3 o'clock in the morning in a parked car. (No, that guy wasn't a coach, keep reading.) During the investigation the girl told them that she was actually a prostitute, and that her pimp was Arron J. Burroughs, a junior varsity assistant football coach (and part time bus driver) at Bowie High School. They set up a mini-sting and had the girl call the coach to come pick her up after she was done turning her trick. Of course, he showed up and cops also found two pounds of pot in his car, at which point Burroughs admitted that he "supplemented his income by selling the drug." A judge ordered Burroughs held without bail on a charge of first-degree child sexual abuse. (And yes, he counts as HS Coach Sex Scandal #122 for the year.) Washington Post

With Football Star While Her Children Slept Nearby - Yes, we know
it's late in the year and most sports/crime websites have already done their
"best of the year" issues, but this is EXACTLY why we wait until
sometime mid-January to do ours: all these great last minute stories! And please
don't tell me this one wasn't worth waiting for: Darcie Esson, 32, was a former
cheerleading coach and current teacher at Elizabeth High School in Colorado who
has been described as “very dedicated and energetic” in her job. To
celebrate her divorce on November 10, Esson allegedly traveled with her two
young children, aged 4 and 8, along with a 17-year-old baby sitter to Glenwood
Springs to watch the football team in a playoff game. And, for some reason, they
stayed at the same motel as the football team with reservations made by someone
at the small school. According to police, Esson went out drinking with some
other adults and came back a little tipsy after midnight. About the same time, a
17-year-old member of the football team--and former student of hers--was
sneaking out of his hotel room and made his way to Esson's room where she
allegedly offered him booze and then started kissing HS Coach Sex Scandal #126! The First Rule of HS Football Sex Club: No Talking About HS Football Sex Club - In one of the strangest stories we've reported about so far this year, a football coach and a former student from Ozen High School in Beaumont, Texas have been indicted by a grand jury for sexual offenses against at least one female student. That in itself would not be that unusual, but testimony from the victim and other students revealed the existence of a secret sex club for football players known as The 3K. That stood for--we're not making this up!--the “Koochie Kissing Klique” (or "klick" or "klub" in some reports). It's alleged that former freshman coach Tommy Floyd Granger and former football star Byron Aaron Bell created the club to provide prominent senior members of the HS football team with access to young girls from the freshman class for sexual favors, primarily oral sex. One young lady joined the club, then had second thoughts several years later and told her mother which launched a police investigation into the matter. Grand jury reports now say that the 3K has been around since at least 2001and authorities allege that both Granger and Bell were believed to have committed sexual acts themselves with the alleged victim in the school's field house, the meeting place for most 3K "exchanges". They also expect other victims to come forward, now that the secret of the 3K has been broken. If convicted, both men could face up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. most recent batch of charges. #165! Not Just Your Typical HS Coach Sex Scandal - Let me see if I can explain this one: Police arrested former coach Paul Ice, 38, on a probation violation after they found 51 graphic images of women engaging in sex on his cell phone. According to the cops, one of the images, "depicts a female of questionable age" having sex with a man. That's a problem because Ice is out on parole after a conviction last year when he videotaped himself having sex with a 16-year-old girl. As bad as that was by itself, there's more: he then reportedly dubbed small portions of that onto movies he was renting from a local grocery store and then returning them. (Vindy) #85! Coach Allegedly Uses School Debit Card at Brothel - Well, sure, they are convenient and it does seem like EVERYONE takes them today, but it might have been a good idea to use cash instead of a debit card in this case. Records indicate that former Fallbrook High School (California) football coach Dennis Hooligan used the card to rent a car for a November coaching clinic in Nevada. So far, so good. Once in Carson City however, the debit card was used again at 48 Kit Kat Drive . . . the address of the Kit Kat Guest Ranch, a perfectly legal Nevada brothel. Where did the money in the account come from? Apparently, the expenses were paid by a booster club account using money raised by players and students. No one is saying that coach Hooligan spent the money at the Kit Kat brothel, but he resigned after the school started an investigation into the use of the money for his trip. just looked like another interesting story. Now, after extensive work by the Detroit
Free Press comes a much clearer, and creepier, story of former Tecumseh High
School (Michigan) track coach Matthew Peterson, a top candidate for our
"Bad Coach of the Year Award." As you may have already read,
"Coach Pete" as he liked to have the kids call him (or his hip-hop
name of "the
Dizzle"), is now in jail after he was able to cut a deal with authorities where he plead
guilty to four felonies, including distributing pornography to children.
Originally Peterson, 33, faced a whopping 32 charges related to sex parties that
were held at his house, including accessory to rape. You really need to read the
full article to understand all of this, but among the things he's accused of
are: #51 is a Classic HS Coach Sex Scandal! Usually coaches who have sex with underage students get caught when the kids tell someone, but it's very rare that the coach rats HIMSELF out. But that's apparently what happened to 24-year-old David Lee Martin of Port Crane, NY. You see, David, who was a coach at Chenango Forks High School, wanted to be a Vermont State Trooper. He appeared to be well qualified until they slapped that lie detector on him and Martin was forced to admit that he had sexual contact -- including intercourse -- with a 15-year-old girl at least twice two years ago. Coach Claims Sex With 15-Year-Old Girl Was Okay Because They Had "Covenant of Love" - Garry Unthank Jr., 23 a volunteer basketball coach at Community Christian Academy in Kentucky, was charged with having sex with a 15-year-old female player. According to police, Unthank began having sex with the girl in January at a relative's home. For some reason, she told her family, who then went to the police. Of course, Unthank admitted having sex with the girl, but told police it was consensual and said the two had entered into a "covenant of love." For those of you keeping score, the age of consent in Kentucky--while low--is still 16. (Cincy Post)

Coach Says He's "In Love" With Teen He Made Sex Videos With - William "Buck" Lanham, one of Florida's top high-school coaches while at Orlando Christian Prep, was charged with possession of child pornography and possession of marijuana after a 23-year-old woman claims the two have been having sex since she was 14. The proof? When cops raided Lanham's home, they found videotapes of him and the young woman having sex. Because of his previous arrests (and the criminal record of his assistant coach and brother) the way that Orlando private schools screen teachers and coaches is being questioned. HS Basketball Coach Resigns After He Buys Ad in Yearbook Showing Picture of Him Hugging Female Student - The district is calling the relationship between former boy's basketball coach Scott Teter and former student Jenna Marcacci, now 22 "inappropriate." On the other hand, Marcacci goes just a little bit further and she says robbed her of “the best years of my life” by Teter. At this point, no one is saying there was anything sexual going on, but how often did a teacher at YOUR high school buy a picture ad in the yearbook to show everyone how close he was to one female student? And to top things off, in the ad, Marcacci and Teter signed their messages “love ya” and “love,” respectively. According to the school, of the more than 150 paid ads in the yearbook, it's the only one between a teacher and a student. (Three pictures show the pair embracing, which under Florida’s professional code of conduct is prohibited. For his part, Teter is saying nothing inappropriate happened, although Marcacci paints a picture of being a virtual slave to the coach. On top of all that, there was also apparently a hazing incident recently involving members of the basketball team as they took part in conditioning drills under the watchful eye of--you guessed it--Coach Teter. (Florida Today) Headline of the Year: "Naked Porch Parade Lands Teacher in Jail" - You've seen this happen on TV and in the movies lots of times: a person jumps out of the shower with just a towel on and goes outside to get the mail or a paper and gets locked out of the house naked. Always comedy gold! Well, that's NOT what happened here. According to Arlington, Mass. police, last Sunday morning a man approached one of their officers and reported seeing a naked man on a nearby porch accosting a group of women who were passing by. Officers didn't just race over and arrest the guy though. Oh no. They got into an unmarked car and staked out the residence, waiting for another show to begin . . . and they weren't disappointed. A few minutes later, Patrick O’Connor, 35, a science teacher and track coach in nearby Woburn, reportedly walked out on the porch naked and proudly waved his little javelin around as two women, one with an infant in a baby carriage, walked past his house. When officers tried to arrest him, O'Conner ran into the house, locked the door and wouldn't come out. Cops got a warrant and a key from the relative of the home's owner and made their way inside where they found the coach hiding underneath a blanket wearing only spandex shorts. HS Coach Sex Scandal of the Year: Man Puts on Wig, Fake Fingernails, to Trick
Boys Into Thinking He's Female Masseuse - Although the total numbers are off
the record pace of 2004 (267) high school coaches seem to be working overtime to
come up with new and unique ways to get in trouble with the law. Two weeks ago
we had the story of the DC area coach who was allegedly acting as a pimp for a
15-year-old girl. Then there was the coach from Texas who allegedly helped create a secret sex club for senior football players.
But Robert Dacey of Massachusetts may have them all beat! According to police
Dacey (pictured right in court), who was a coach at Waltham High School and
drama teacher at the local middle school, convinced two male students to come
back to his home multiple times last year. Once there, the coach told the
boys that he had "a friend" who ran a local massage parlor and this
guy had a new female masseuse he wanted to "test" before he actually
hired her. (Hmm, I guess to a middle schooler that might make sense.)
Of course, for the test to be truly fair the boys would have to be blindfolded
so as not to be influenced by her beauty, but would be compensated for the
less-than-professional handy work to the tune of $50 each. He then left the room and a
little while later the woman would return to give the silent massages . . .
which of course lead to sex with the boys, both 8th graders. Why did the boys
think it was a woman? They could feel her long fingernails and when she got
close enough, they could also feel her long hair. This happened at least three
times when the boys were together and a few more times individually.
Unfortunately for them, police believe the "female masseuse" (cue the
song from "The Crying Game") was actually Dacey wearing a wig
and fake fingernails. Yeah, that would fool me. This week the former coach pleaded not guilty yesterday to
two counts of child rape, two counts of child enticement, and a count of
indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or older. (

Coach Sex Scandal #167 Update: Arrest Warrant Issued, Blonde Cheerleading Coach
Turns Herself In to Cops - This whole thing sounds like a predictable Penthouse
letter: a 17-year-old high school boy goes on a weekend field trip with his
senior class to a YMCA camp. The lone chaperone? The blonde cheerleading coach .
. . who just happens to be the wife of the principal! (See earlier story below.)
And even after the school finds out that something may have happened, it takes
several days for them to notify parents and the law doesn't get involved until
AFTER they see the story on local TV. That's what is alleged in the case of Carrie
McCandless,
29 (mug shot picture right) who turned herself in to authorities today to face
charges of sexual assault on a child and contributing to the delinquency of a
minor. But don't start your "women in prison" movie fantasies:
McCandless posted $20,000 bond and is back on the street. In her defense, the
former coach claims she didn't know the student who made the allegations and
hasn't done anything wrong. (

Then, according to police, the two had sex on the floor of the motel room
while the kids and the babysitter slept nearby. And all of this would have
stayed quiet except when, shortly thereafter, fellow football players ripped on
their teammate because he was still a virgin. Of course, being a teenaged boy he
then allegedly not only boasted he wasn't a virgin, but that he had lost his
virginity to a teacher, Ms. Esson. Then--Surprise!--word spread like wildfire
among the students and one of them reported it to the principal. The school
investigated and initially the pair denied it, but the boy's mother became
suspicious and got access to his cell phone records and found that he and Esson had exchanged
more than 120 calls or text messages and that some of their text messages
allegedly refer to their ongoing relationship and the sexual incident. Esson
now faces a felony charge of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position
of trust and will likely lose her job . . . because she has an expired teaching
certificate. Oh, and we think the team lost the playoff game. And that also
makes her #191 on the year, in case you're keeping track of that thing. (

Still Gets Jail Time - Now there's a headline for you! Mishelle Robinson,
29, a coach and choreographer at a cheerleading school in Ohio, was
