More University of Memphis Woman's Cross Country Team Hazing Photos If you haven't heard about this story yet, here's the basics: the student newspaper at the University of Memphis published a picture of three freshmen members of the women's cross country team in the middle of what appears to be a hazing ritual. They are dressed in hooker-type clothing, have words scrawled on them and appear to be boozing it up even though they are all under 21. The school reviewed the situation and decided it wasn't hazing because everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves. Fortunately for you, the story does not end there as below are several more pictures from the same source where the original picture was located (we are assuming they will be pulled down when the school sees this page). See if these help you decide if this was hazing or not. (If you want to hear what an expert has to say, check out this op-ed piece by a friend of BadJocks, Dr. Susan Lipkins.) The best we can tell from looking at the pictures is that this was some kind of drunken scavenger hunt where the gals had to go from place to place and acquire sexually themed items from other male jocks and/or frats such as autographs on their bodies, participating in beer chugging contests, asking to be mooned, and getting male jocks to take their clothes off. Above each picture is the actual caption that accompanied them on online. (Thanks to a sharp-eyed BadJocks reader who wishes to remain anonymous for the link!) Below the pictures are comments from students that appeared in the school's student newspaper The Daily Helmsman.

Nice job girls Puh-lease! Can We PLEASE get away from all of this politically correct bullcrap??? Do ANY of these people look to be in pain, distress or misery? Get a life! Jennifer Earp
Hazing, in some situations (for instance, the Memphis cross country
team) can be a team bonding experience if it is controlled. Sure,
there are times when hazing is more dangerous than fun, but in this
particular case it is not. According to this article, the Memphis
handbook defines hazing as "actions taken and situations created
in connection with initiation or affiliation with any
organization". As far as I am aware, the entire Freshman
experience, no matter what your social role is, is a hazing
experience. Taking part in new social situations and undergoing
certain pressures is simply a part of adjustment to college life,
including acceptance to groups. That is the mere truth of it. This
isn't a question of "hazing, or harmless fun". It is a
question of where to draw the line between harmful activity and
playful activity. This situation certainly does not prove that these
freshman girls were forced or threatened into a harmful situation,
they merely voluntarily took part in tradition. The photograph that
was submitted was used to achieve a certain opinion form the audience.
It is exploiting these young girls and probably offering more
embarrassment and unwanted negative attention than their hazing
experience ever came close to. Has it ever been considered that poor
journalism can be the real source of humiliation?

"The women are dressed in revealing clothes..."
I dare you to spend one month training with these girls and see if you
can hang. They need to blow off steam every once in a while too.I guess you would be surprised that the bottoms they have on are similar to those used in competition by most NCAA women's cross country teams and most professional female runners. Of course you really just wanted a photo that would cause people to pick up your poor publication. Vincent Perryman Mr Laurie, have you ever been invited to a college party? Many people under age drink, great revelation there! Robert Anderson Tyler Trentham Ericka Is this what technology that was meant to create friendly and helpful networks between college students has come to? Facebook was created as a networking program for students to communicate for social, educational, and occupational purposes. It was NOT meant to be a source of "juicy gossip" for newspaper editors and writers. It is pathetic that a newspaper would use the photos on facebook that are posted for fun and are essentially harmless as a vicious tool to CREATE (NOT REPORT) such a tabloidesque story based on VERY FEW facts OR first-hand accounts. In fact, the word "Enquirer" actually came to mind when I read this article. The Daily Helmsman is a well-respected university publication that, I think, deals with, or should deal with, actual IMPORTANT issues facing our university, such as what new developments are being made to the campus and its programs, and to what our money is contributing around the University. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed in such an article that seemed to only focus on rumors and gossip, NOT actual facts. I may have understood this story if someone had been hurt, or if potential harmful activities were involved. However, the activities these girls participated in were IN NO WAY harmful to anyone. The entire incident has been blown way out of proportion, and honestly, I believe apologies should be made to the entire womens' track team for causing them unwanted and negative publicity. The track teams are extremely hard working, dedicated, and talented individuals who represent this university well. Next time, Mr. Sports Editor, why don't you edit articles like this junk OUT, and save students like those of us who have expressed our opinions here the typing time. thanks. After all, no news is just good news on it's way.Lindsay Grills
