BadJocks Stories From the Week of May 14, 2006 "Best $27 I Ever Spent" - Woman claims that the Idiot Proof Diet helped her lose over 50 lbs, got rid of her heart burn, and cleared up problems with her gallbladder. Read her amazing story here Northwestern Initiation Update: Soccer Alums Speak Out - A group of former Northwestern women soccer players issued a statement Tuesday the team did not have a history of such incidents. (ChicagoSports.com)
It's
Here! BadJocks "End-of-the-School-Year Initiation Picture Blowout
Bonanza"- You've waited patiently since Monday for our "Dirty
Dozen," (initiation pictures from twelve colleges across the USA) that
we've found online over the past few weeks. We wish we could say this is all
there is out there, but that's not EVEN CLOSE to the truth. Given enough time and
money we could probably post 100 sets like these, maybe more. Why? Well, first
off, it's time to reveal the source for these, and all of our other initiation
pictures: Webshots.com. Did you know
that if you put in the term "initiation" into their search tool,
you'll get more than 135,000 images. 135,000!!! Granted, not all of those
are sports (most are those damn A/V geeks), so try just "soccer
initiation." The result: almost 2800! "Lacrosse initiation or lax
initiation?" More than 2200 combined. And the list goes on and on for every
sport you can imagine. Some are just one picture of some guy with his head
shaved like a monk, wearing nothing but women's panties with a half-empty 40 ouncer
duct taped to his hand . . . others are entire sets that document a whole
evening of fun. And this update from our hazing expert, Dr. Susan Lipkins:
Northwestern Update: NU player: We were 'having fun' - According to a new article in the Chicago Sun Times, a member of the women's soccer team told them that, "none of the players on Northwestern's women's soccer team was forced to do anything at an event now the subject of a university hazing investigation." The unnamed player claimed that despite what the pictures may show, team members were not forced to do "anything against their will,'' and added that everyone involved was "just having fun.'' However, the article does go on to quote the Northwestern's student handbook which states that hazing is prohibited "even in cases where a new member of a group agrees to participate." Update: Northwestern Suspends Soccer Team Pending Investigation - Read the statement by Northwestern University Director of Athletics Mark Murphy here.
Those Wildcats! Northwestern Women's Soccer Team Initiation Includes
Pictures of Bondage, Lap Dances, and Simulated Sex Acts - By
now, most loyal BadJocks readers are familiar with our publication of
pictures from various college athletic teams that
seem to indicate that--surprise!--hazing still occurs regularly on
campuses. They also seem to be getting more intense, more violent and
frequently more
sexual in nature. This most recent set of pictures are some
of the most significant we have ever seen . . . and also the most
complete. In all, there are 46 pictures from the original album, posted
on a public picture sharing site, that appear to document the entire
evening's activates.. At first, we thought they were pretty much like
others we had found: underage drinking, girls in degrading outfits for
the occasion, faces written on with markers, etc. Then we turned the page
and found the freshman not only blindfolded but with their hands
securely tied
behind their backs with athletic tape. With some research we determined that this was
the Northwestern
University Women's Soccer Team (link
to roster). Before you start, you may want to read "Hazing 101: An Overview of the Photo Album of Northwestern Women's Soccer Team" by our favorite hazing expert, Dr. Susan Lipkins
How prevalent is hazing at the NCAA
Division I level? Fortunately for us, New Mexico visiting assistant
professor Colleen McGlone completed an extensive
survey just last fall on the subject. The big shocker? The high
percent of female athletes who reported being hazed. Too bad Ms. McGlone
didn't have access to some of our pictures!
Update on HS Coach Sex Scandal #76 - Last week this
just looked like another interesting story. Now, after extensive work by the Detroit
Free Press comes a much clearer, and creepier, story of former Tecumseh High
School (Michigan) track coach Matthew Peterson, a top candidate for our
"Bad Coach of the Year Award." As you may have already read,
"Coach Pete" as he liked to have the kids call him (or his hip-hop
name of "the
Dizzle"), is now in jail after he was able to cut a deal with authorities where he plead
guilty to four felonies, including distributing pornography to children.
Originally Peterson, 33, faced a whopping 32 charges related to sex parties that
were held at his house, including accessory to rape. You really need to read the
full article to understand all of this, but among the things he's accused of
are: HS Baseball Players in Trouble for Giving Obscene Hand Gesture in Team Yearbook Photo - Six baseball players at Lincoln Park Academy in Florida say they were just trying to say, "Hello. What's Up?" when they posed for photos in the school's 2006 yearbook. Instead, school officials felt that the use of the obscene gesture known as "The Shocker" wasn't quite up to school standards and not only banned the offending players from LP's awards ceremony last Friday, but also stripped them of their varsity letters and post-season awards. For his part, Lincoln Park baseball coach Chuck Stewart said he "regretted the picture and was not aware of the gesture's meaning until after the yearbook's publication." (TCPalm.com) If you want to learn all about "The Shocker" check out this entry from Wikipedia.com. Danny Almonte Update: Former Little League "Star" Now Married to Older Woman - You remember Danny Almonte, don't you? He was the New York area Little League pitcher who was dominating the LL World Series a few years back until it was discovered he was nearly two years over the legal age to play. Oops! Well, Danny is now all grown up at 19 and married . . . to a 30-year-old woman, while he's still in high school! (We can only image the fun when those two showed up at the prom.) According to the NY Daily News, Almonte says of his new bride, "She's special. My family is happy for me." Despite what happened to him earlier in his career, Almonte has bounced back and gone on to become a star on the Monroe High School team and is expected to be drafted by a Major League Baseball team next month. (Daily News) Update on HS Coach Sex Scandal #156 for 2005: Man Sentenced to 195 Years in Prison - Steven Oliver, 32, a Sumter County, Florida youth soccer coach was sentenced to 195 years in prison this week for molesting 14-year-old twin girls. (WESH) Driving Range Manager Attacked Over Errant Balls - What would you do if golf balls from a nearby driving range kept landing in your yard? (I mean, besides the obvious answer of creating little pipe cleaner people using the balls as heads and then selling your fabulous creations at flea markets.) Well, a Massachusetts man allegedly took matters into his own hands--literally--this week after his complaints that errant golf balls from the CityGolf Natick range kept landing in his nearby yard went unheeded. According to police, Stephen Lawrence, 42, came over to the driving range and allegedly shoved a 64-year-old manager in the chest in front of several witnesses, despite the fact that the victim told him he had a bad heart. According to CityGolf Natick owner Gary Parker, "While being attacked, the (victim) said he had a heart condition and said, ’I have a valve there,’ and the guy pushed him on the chest and he continued to push him there several times. He is a frail, 64-year-old man with a heart condition." Lawrence was charged with assault and battery on a person older than 60. (Metrowest Daily News) Incident at Prom Results in Reprimand for Winning Georgia HS Football Coach - Not exactly clear what he did to deserve this but students at Parkview High School say that their head football coach was being loud and drawing attention to himself and this year's prom and spent part of the night dancing with female students. That is, until his wife allegedly had to pull him away from them, according to one of the students. According to a letter of reprimand issued this week, students and teachers speculated Cecil Flowe--who was supposed to be a chaperone at the event--may have been under the influence of alcohol based on his behavior. In his defense, Flowe attributed his "erratic behavior" to a prescription drug he takes for a medical condition. (AJC) Hockey Official Suspended, Allegedly Stole $25,000 From Scholarship Fund - The Central Massachusetts Hockey Officials Association's bank account was just a little short this month. About $25,000 short. According to the group, Joseph Jacobs, who was responsible for assigning referees for the association allegedly stole $25,000 from the group's scholarship fund before someone noticed the money was missing. The cash has since been paid back, but Jacobs has been removed from his position. (EyeWitnessNewsTV.com) Update on HS Coach Sex Scandal #156 From 2005: Coach Could Get Life for Relationship With Teens - Steven Keith Oliver, 32, #156 from 2005, used to be a coach for the Lady Lake Soccer Club. That is, until he was convicted of having sex with two of his teenage players. Now, Oliver could be sentenced to life in prison this week because of charges brought by two girls, now 14, who played soccer for him and were also frequent guests at sleepovers and barbecues at his home. (Orlando Sentinal) Look What's in the Columbus Dispatch Today: Rituals of Silence Prolong Horrors of Hazing, Experts Say - How timely! It's about the rash of nasty high school hazings recently, including the one that involved the coaches allegedly sexually assaulting a player on a team bus. My favorite quote is from counseling psychologist Norman Pollard, of Alfred University in New York, who says, "It goes from being silly and fun to being very dangerous and humiliating." The article also quotes our expert friend Dr. Susan Lipkins. (Columbus Dispatch) Duke Lacrosse Update: Grand Jury Indicts Third Player - Today, a North Carolina grand jury indicted David Evans, a senior and team captain on charges related to the exotic dancer's accusations that she was raped and beaten at a team party in March. Evans becomes the third member of the team indicted, and now faces charges of first-degree forcible rape, sexual offense and kidnapping. (Forbes) Three New HS Coach Sex Scandals! Texas Running Back Arrested With 5 lbs of Weed! Nate Newton would be proud! One of the key players for the defending National Champion Texas Longhorns football team, running back Ramonce "Dude" Taylor, has been suspended from the team after sheriff's deputies found a little pot in his car. And by a little, we mean A LOT . . . nearly five pounds of marijuana. And for some reason he also had a live 40-caliber round of ammunition in his car. Not a good combination to have on hand when cops pull you over. And before you Longhorn fans think this one will be handled quietly by the coach, the local DA has decided to charge the sophomore tailback with a couple of felonies which means Taylor could face up to two years in jail if convicted. (Houston Chronicle) Duke Lacrosse Update: DNA Evidence Found on Victim Came From Her Boyfriend! - The experts who completed the second round of DNA tests on the stripper who has accused three players on the Duke men's lacrosse team of sexually assaulting her said that the same came from only one man. Defense attorneys declined to name that man, but the mother of the boyfriend of the victim claims the evidence goes back to her son, who is definitely NOT a Duke lacrosse player. (ABC News) #76! HS Coach Sex Scandal of the Year Finalist? Track Coach Accused of Running Video Sex Club - It's one thing for high school coaches to have sex with underage students. It's another to have them not only encourage other young people to have public sex, but also videotape it at the same time. Matthew Peterson, former track coach at Tecumseh High School in Michigan was ordered to spend up to 7 years in prison as part of a plea agreement for possessing and distributing child sexually abusive material. More specifically, prosecutors allege that Coach Peterson watched as students performed sex acts--being recorded on videotape--in a hot tub at a pre-graduation party at HIS HOUSE. According to Courtney Morgan Jr., the attorney for one of the victims a 19-year-old who is now a college student, "The coach was the one that pressured her; suggesting that she should do this. The coach’s house, the coach’s hot tub, the coach’s booze. The coach was watching as this all went down." And it sounds like there was quite a crowd watching at the time: police say there were at least 12 other witnesses to the sexual assault at that party. But wait, there's more! According to Morgan, his client may not be the only victim of Peterson's: there are also allegations that the former coach headed a club where his athletes became members--we're not making this up!--after performing sex acts with fellow students on video tape. In fact, one of the tapes was shown at the pre-graduation party where the alleged sexual assault on Morgan's client (who believes she was drugged) took place. Said Morgan, "He had the tape. He said ‘I could get in trouble if I pushed play,’ but I can’t stop anyone else from doing so." (WXYZ - link includes video clip!)
How Many Home Runs Would Barry Bonds Have Hit Without the Alleged Assistance of Steroids? Well, now that Mr. Bulky has tied Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list, folks are taking a closer look at exactly how he did it. And, according to ESPN's Page 2, assuming you believe "Game of Shadows" about Bonds alleged steroid use since 1998 is there a way to determine how many home runs he would actually have at this point instead of 714? Try 616. This article includes lots of science and even more guessing. (ESPN Page 2) Girl's Softball Coach Accused of Slapping Opposing Player During Post Game Sportsmanship Handshake - Once again, BadJocks has to ask if the long standing tradition of shaking hands after a game is still a worthwhile tradition . . . especially when it frequently seems to end in some kind of altercation. Not that we're against good sportsmanship in youth sports, it's just that these types of forced confrontations between victor and defeated just seem rife for further irritating already bruised egos. (Not too mention it's just too damn easy to take a cheap shot at someone's unprotected groin.) Take for instance the case of Diane Grande, 43, a girls softball coach with the Carle Place Little League (Long Island). Grande was not only arrested after slapping an 11-year-old player from another team on the arm during the post game handshake, but also stands accused of taunting the preteen with profanity while she was batting against the coach's daughter who was pitching during the game. According to the victim's mother, Grande has been removed at coach. (Newsday) |
