UK Soccer Fans Banned a Total of 130 Years for Pre-Game Brawl - A Chelsea supporter by the name of James Healy, 26, and some of his mates thought it would be fun to challenge rival fans of Aston Villa to a friendly brawl before a game in March of 2005. When the dust had all settled, 13 young men received a variety of sentences including community service, fines, and some were banned as long as 10 years from watching ANY soccer game played in the UK. Healy was fortunate, he's only banned for five. According to Scotland Yard, in total, hooligans involved in the brawls received a total of nine years and three months imprisonment, 130 years of bans, 450 hours of community service, and six years of community rehabilitation. (Cambridge News) Surfer Rage? Man Banned From Beaches After Assaulting Others - We always thought surfers were mellow live-and-let-live kinda guys. Apparently NOT down under where Australian John Vincent Dunne -- an alleged serial surf stalker (try saying that five times fast) - has been banned from setting foot on ANY of Sydney's beaches. Why? Well, according to cops, Dunne "mounted a campaign of intimidation" at a popular Northern Beaches break smashing surfboards and muscling out others who dared to ride the same waves that he did. (Not cool, dude!) In total he faces a whopping 29 counts of assault, stalking and malicious damage, and is accused of harassing as many as seven people - including an Anglican Minister. (Daily Telegraph) #17! Soccer Coach Accused of Fondling . . . at Women's Prison? Okay, so he's a junior college soccer coach rather than a HS coach (close enough), but this story has BadJocks written all over it. Oscar Lambdin, 49, the men's soccer coach at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois, has been placed on unpaid leave after being charged with fondling a female inmate more than a year ago at a women's prison. Why a women's prison? Well, that's where Lambdin works full time as a "recreation specialist." (ABC Local)
#17! Girl's HS basketball coach accused of having sex with a 17-year-old player . . . from rival team. (Fayetteville Online)
German Soccer Fans Taunt Rivals With Giant Weiners - We've said it before and we'll say it again: soccer may be boring as heck to watch, but soccer fans--especially those in Europe--seem to have a knack for making things interesting. Just last month fans in the UK stole the inflatable sheep mascot of their rivals and held it for ransom on eBay. Now comes word of more inflatable fan fun: hundreds of fans of German club Borussia Dortmund waved huge inflatable penises at local rivals Schalke 04 this past weekend above a sign telling them to, uh, have relations with themselves. We're not sure if the taunting helped or hurt as the teams played to an exciting 0-0 draw. (Reuters) Rugby Star Banned for Rest of Season for Biting Opponent - Epi Taione, who plays rugby for the Sale team in the UK appeared before an disciplinary panel on Monday to answer questions about a biting incident in a recent match. Taione admitted chomping on the forearm of Munster forward Denis Leamy in a Heineken Cup match last month. Because there were "no aggravating factors and there were various compelling mitigating factors," (like there's an acceptable reason to bite someone during a sporting event?) the panel decided to ban Taione for 18 weeks, essentially ending his season and forcing him to seek meat-based protein somewhere else. (Reuters) #15! Shawn Graves, a coach at Marion High School in South Carolina was charged with two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor after being accused of having improper relations with a 15-year-old student on the campus. (The State) Thanks to Peter Thiele for the link! Bad Sports Reporter? It's not often that the journalists covering the news are the story, but there are exceptions. Take Rozel A. Lee, a sports writer for the Tampa Tribune for more than 10 years. When it came time to vote for the top local football player in her area Lee apparently had a favorite she hoped would win. So she allegedly gave the lowest score possible to his closest rival, Hillsborough High School quarterback Jarred Fayson, who was barely edged out by Robinson High School quarterback Marcello Trigg . . . Lee's favorite. When asked how she could possibly rate Fayson out of the top five, Lee explained, "I've always voted like this. When you want a desired outcome, you are going to eliminate the closest opponent to that desired outcome." The Tribune didn't care for that explanation and fired her. (Palm Beach Post) Oops! Recruit Boasts That A&M Keeps "Your Pockets Full" of Money - It's not exactly the kind of thing a college football coach likes to hear from one of his star recruits on signing day. Midland Lee receiver Terrence McCoy signed a letter of intent with Texas A&M last week then promptly told the Midland Reporter-Telegram, "They take care of you down there. I know from my brother they keep your pockets full, give you plenty of money, keep feeding you meals." And McCoy should know: older brother, Jamie, is a freshman quarterback for the Aggies. The school, of course, quickly scrambled into action with coach Dennis Franchione issuing a statement that simply said, "We follow NCAA rules here at Texas A&M," and went on to assume that McCoy was talking about the paltry $30 per day schools are allowed to provide players hosting prospects for entertainment purposes on official visits. Uh huh. (Houston Chronicle) Parents Brawl After Grade School Basketball Game - Some parents didn't like the officiating at the seventh-grade boys basketball game between Toyon and McCaffrey Junior High School in California. So, of course, the mature thing to do was wait until the game was over and brawl with fans from the opposing team until the cops arrived. Thanks mom and dad! (Calaveras Enterprise)
"Ghetto Prom" Email Gets Warrior Exec Fired - Have you ever sent an email to someone you shouldn't have or passed one along that wasn't in good taste? Well, image if you were Eric Govan, who's on the media relations staff for the Golden State Warriors, sent out an e-mail with the subject line "Ghetto Prom" and featuring a number of photos, many depicting scantily clad black teens in formal attire with a running commentary on their attire. And the email didn't go out to just anyone: it was sent to dozens of newspaper reporters, columnists and sports editors, as well as television and radio stations. Oops! Govan claims it was meant for his wife, but that didn't help him as the NBA team fired him for the mistake. Not sure if these are the same pictures and captions as those in the email, but it is labeled "Ghetto Prom" and there are 16 photos and the captions are racially insensitive.
