For those of you too young to remember, ABC's Wide World of Sports had one of the greatest opening sequences that ran for years and when the words 'agony of defeat" were spoken a ski jumper missed the end of the ramp and had a horrific spill slamming into about ten different posts and poles. Well, THAT GUY never did anything wrong, but Finnish ski jumper Matti Nykaenen has been arrested again--for beating his wife--just days after his release from prison on a short stint for an attempted murder charge. Nykaenen was out on parole after serving half of the two-year, two-month sentence he received for stabbing a friend during a drinking binge in August 2004 (13 months for stabbing a guy?) According to the victim, his wife Mervi Tapola-Nykaenen, Nykaenen hit the bottle as soon as he came home from prison adding, "He started drinking right away. He wasn't sleeping and was eating nothing." I'm sure everyone remembers that he won gold and silver medals at the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo before becoming the first man in Olympic history to claim both individual jumps at the Calgary Games, four years later, as well as the team title. (The Australian) Have You Heard About the Rich Jerk? - The Rich Jerk claims to have sold a moneymaking website on eBay for more than $390,000 and made several million last year on other Internet ventures and now he wants to share his secrets with you. Read Bob Reno's review of the RichJerk's moneymaking scam here. Australian Soccer Mascot Accused of Molesting Boys - You just hate to see wolves go bad, but that's how it appears right now. Ken Franks, the man inside the mascot costume for the Wollongong Wolves of the Australian Soccer League has been accused of molesting at least four young men going back to the mid-90s.Franks faces six counts of aggravated sexual assault, four counts of aggravated indecent assault and three counts of gross indecency, in total 40 charges for alleged offences against boys between 1992 and May of this year. (Illawarra Mercury) HS Coach Sex Scandal #129 Update: Coach Forced to Post $1 Million Bail to Get Out of Jail - Wow! That seems like a lot of money to get you out of jail when all you're accused of is having sex with an eighth grade girl you coached and inviting her over to your house to "baby-sit." We first reported the story of former teacher and middle school coach Bill Giordano back in August when several former students came forward and accused him of having inappropriate relations with them . . . one going all the way back to 1988. His sister posted the million dollar bond to get him out of jail until his trial expected to take place sometime next year. (San Jose Mercury News) This Week's High School Foot-Brawl Comes to You From Ohio - Virtually everyone agrees that the final score of the Northmont High, Trotwood-Madison game was 42-14, with Northmont coming out on top. What is still unclear is what happened during the post-game handshake which ended in brawl between players and at least one coach getting knocked on his ass. By the time police got there the teams had been separated and headed back to their locker rooms, but an investigation is being conducted and players and coaches from both schools could be disciplined by the Greater Western Ohio Conference and the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Some witnesses speculated that the altercation was the result of trash talking between players and Trotwood's unhappiness with Northmont's decision to go for a fake punt while ahead 42-0. HS Baseball Coach Accused of Robbing Gas Station - Police don't have a motive, but they say Gregory Joseph Woods, 40, a teacher and baseball coach at Yreka High School in Northern California, was arrested over the weekend after robbing a gas station/convenience store using a can of pepper spray. According to police, Woods made one employee lay on the floor and pepper sprayed her before taking money and tobacco products. Unfortunately for him, a second employee was hiding in the soft drink cooler and saw the whole thing and used his cell phone to call 911. Nearby police units responded and chased Woods for several miles through local neighborhoods before he crashed his pick-up truck into another vehicle. Woods is charged with armed robbery, burglary, evading law enforcement by reckless driving, false imprisonment, and--I'm not making this up!--illegal use of pepper spray. (Siskiyou Daily News) Study: Bad Jocks Have Deficient Moral Reasoning - A college professor has spent 17 years and untold amounts of taxpayer dollars to discover something she could have learned for free visiting this site: athletes do bad things and really don't give a crap. Sharon Stoll, a professor at the University of Idaho, has concluded that a great many jocks are "deficient in moral reasoning", meaning when they do bad things they really don't see anything wrong with their behavior. Her research found that members of male sports teams scored lower in morals than individual sport athletes and that the longer they competed in sports, the more morally calloused male athletes become. Not surprisingly, that also appears to be happening to female athletes in team sports. (Seattle Post) Canadian College Football Hazing Update: McGill Players Who Denied Attacking Freshman Actually Sent Him Letter of Apology - Huh? Just last week, football players at McGill University who were accused of hazing freshman players denied doing anything wrong. Yet, several days after the alleged incident those same players wrote a letter to the victim apologizing for their behavior. According to the victim, he received a copy of the later from head coach Chuck McMann several days after the hazing ritual. As reported last week, the rookie player has alleged a veteran sexually assaulted him in a squash court with a broomstick (referred to as "Dr. Broom") back Aug. 27 as other veterans looked on and cheered. Several players have been suspended from the team and a criminal investigation is pending. (Montreal Gazette) Homecoming Prank Turns Serious When Teacher Whips Out His Sword (And That's Not a Euphemism!) - Yes, it's that time of year again folks, when high school students across the country celebrate the return of alumni to their campus by committing random acts of vandalism. Case in point: Boone High School in Des Moines, Iowa where students were practicing the ancient art of toilet papering a teacher's house . . . only this particular one taught drama and had a collection of stage props at his house, including a rather large sword. When the young hooligans entered his yard the teacher, identified as Trenton Kerger, started chasing after them in the dark and allegedly hit one student in the hand with his weapon. Police were then called to the scene and Kerger, who claims he was just playing along, was arrested and charged with assault causing injury. (Omaha Channel) Soccer Fans Riot, Set Fire to Eight Police Cars After Team Loses - Unlike the US, sports fans in other countries seem to riot when their team loses. Here we set fire to things when we win. Case in point: Indonesian soccer where more than 70 people were arrested for arson and vandalism after fans went on the rampage when their team lost a national championship. Police claim the mob set fire to at least eight police vehicles and also damaged 11 civilian cars Sunday as Persija supporters, mostly in their early 20s (damn kids!), went on a rampage after the team lost 2-3 in the Indonesian League championship final to Persipura. (Today Online) This also marks the end of the Indonesian Fantasy Soccer League for this year. We'll see everyone at the 2006 draft in March! Canadian Cops Take Six Months to Arrest Youth Hockey Coach
Who Pulled Down Pants During Game During Argument With Ref - Texas High Schools Not Playing Fair With Student Athletes? Parents at several Texas high schools want to know why female athletes--especially cheerleaders--seem to be receiving stiffer punishments than their male counterparts. For example: at Keller High School a cheerleader was kicked off the squad this year after meeting briefly with boys in a friend's room at cheerleading camp this summer. About the same time, a varsity football player is still playing even though he was jailed by police for evading arrest after a party was broken up. Oh, and he just happens to be the kid the coach calls "my best defensive player." This article sites several other examples and I would say from my experience with this site that there is some truth to their complaint. What have you seen at your school? (Star-Telegram) HS Football Game Cancelled Before Halftime Due to Brawl - It's a rivalry that got out of hand. The annual grudge match between Grand Rapids Creston vs. Grand Rapids Central (Michigan) ended after an on-field fight between players grew out of control. The bench clearing brawl toward the end of the first half then moved from the field to the stands, at which point school officials ended the game and made everyone leave. Of course, it didn't end there as young fans picked up where the players left off and the fighting continued in the parking lot and surrounding neighborhood. Large numbers of players from both squads are expected to be suspended, possibly crippling each school's ability to field a team next week. Students involved in fighting in the stands and parking like could be expelled. (WOOD TV) HS Tennis Coach Arrested for DUI . . . While Driving Kids to Match! - How bad does your team have to suck for you to get drunk before they even start playing? Indiana motorists noticed a 15-passenger van from Owen Valley High School speeding and driving erratically last Wednesday afternoon on Indiana 46. When police finally caught up with the driver of the van, coach John J. Fuhs, 54, he and is tennis team had already reached Northview High School where the match was to be played. State police charged Fuhs with drunken driving after they found his blood-alcohol content measured 0.15 percent, almost twice the limit to legally drive in Indiana . . . and yet still WAY short of making the Top 20 of the BadJocks BAC Rankings. Arrested at Halftime - Despite being behind 40-0 to New London High School,
there was no rousing halftime speech from Tourtellotte/Ellis Tech football head
coach Tim Panteleakos. That's because coach Panteleakos was arrested on breach
of peace charges at halftime of last Saturday's game. According to police,
Panteleakos felt that the opposing coach, Jack Cochran was deliberately running
up the school when he called timeout just before halftime with a huge lead
already in the books. On the way to the locker room, Panteleakos allegedly told
Cochran that if his coaching didn't change in the second half, “I'll attack
the son of a (bleep) if I have to.” Then, just outside the locker room,
Panteleakos allegedly grabbed and hit a member of the New London security staff,
tried to hit a New London assistant coach and “came at” New London police
captain William Dittman, the arresting officer. Tourtellotte/Ellis Tech went on
to lose 60-0 and their coach has a date in court sometime in the near future. (The
Day) Thanks to Dr. Dobro for the link! #143! Jared Bickling, 29, the assistant baseball coach at University High School in Greeley, Colorado has been charged with a misdemeanor of sexual assault after turning himself in to police for being involved in a year-and-a-half long relationship with a girl who is now 17. (Greeley Tribune) HS Loses Football Game, Teen Fan Shoots at Opposing Team's Bus With Pellet Gun - He didn't even try to hide on a grassy knoll and take his shots. A 16-year-old student from Granite High School in Utah has been arrested after a weekend football game that saw his team lose to Canyon View High School. According to police, the boy was in a car with several others Granite students that pulled in front of the Canyon View team bus as it was trying to leave the stadium, and he whipped out a pellet gun and fired a shot and into the bus. At least one Canyon View student was hit in the head with a pellet but was not seriously injured. Rambo Jr. is in a juvenile facility charged with suspicion of aggravated assault. (Salt Lake Tribune) HS Baseball Coach Accused of Making His Players Run Naked - It's an update to a story we brought you earlier this summer: the coach of Okayama Sanyo High School in Japan won a national championship this past year, then came allegations the he struck several players and allowed some to smoke, resulting in the school forfeiting the title. Now comes word that the coach also had a unique training method he used to get his players "mentally tough": he forced them to run laps naked on several occasions. The odd thing is, the principal of the school and other officials knew about this odd behavior but said nothing about it because they thought the player's parents knew and approved. (MSN Mainichi) HS Spends $2.5 Million on New Football Field, Can't Use It Because It's Unsafe - Who drew up the blueprints on this one? According to district officials with the already beleaguered Detroit Public Schools, the brand new $2.5 million football field at Cass Technical High is closed after only one game was played there. Why? Apparently, in order to save space, the district didn't put the usual track around the field and instead placed a security fence about 15 feet away from the field: sidelines and end zone. It became apparent after the first game that 15 feet wasn't quite far enough to keep players from running into the fence, so no more games will be played until a solution can be found, such as padding the entire fence or moving it back a few more feet. But that's not the only problem: there are deep holes in the field (a coach put his arm in up to his elbow in one) and the bleachers appear to be unsafe. I guess you don't get much for your $2.5 million these days. (Detroit News) Drill Team "Dance Off" Turns Violent - According to Wichita police, one person was injured and two more arrested after two drill teams began brawling during an impromptu "dance off." According to police, The Dynamic Steppers, a Wichita drill team, were practicing routines over the weekend when members of another drill team, the White Tigers, showed up and challenged the others to a "dance-off." I'm not sure what the rules are for a "dance-off" but apparently things started getting out of hand when the challengers appeared to be losing. At that point a woman struck a 17-year-old Dynamic Steppers drummer in the face with a drumstick who in return punched the 28-year-old woman in the face. Then, according to witnesses, the teen ran toward his Ford Explorer and tried to run over spectators while his mother, who is the Dynamic Steppers coach, allegedly grabbed a box cutter and sliced the other woman's right arm. That took eight stitches to close. At one point more than 50 people were involved in the altercation, but only two arrests were made. (ABC News)
