Flower Mound HS Wrestling Hazing Update: Two Different Parties? - Additional details continue to emerge from the "Human Piñata" Hazing incident we first reported on last week (see picture and story below) at Flower Mound High School in Texas. Nearly 20 students and adults were arrested on a variety of hazing in charges (including at least one for sexual assault) including the wrestling coach after a pre-season pool party allegedly got out of hand. Now comes word however, that the entire incident is being blown out of proportion and parents of some of the arrested wrestlers claim it was nothing more than "horseplay" and offer up that old excuse of "boys being boys." One mother even went so far as to say, "It's like there were two different parties," the one her son attended and no hazing occurred and a second one where younger boys were beaten to a pulp and sexually assaulted with condom-covered fingers. And yet, none of the parents could explain the picture--taken days later--showing the chest of a victims still black and blue from the allegedly hazing.   Of course, the rumor mill at school has been working overtime with one of the more bizarre rumors being that upperclassmen gave the freshmen terminal cancer. (???) This lengthy Dallas Morning News article has a lot more detail about the party. We've also received a few emails about this story, one allegedly from a student at Flower Mound who claimed, "one kid got hit in the head with a football but that was an accident and he has a history of concussions." If that's the case, remind me again why he was on the wrestling team?
BONUS: Coach Charged Because He "Did Nothing" to Stop Hazing - According to police reports, Flower Mound wrestling coach Charles Michael Zascavage watched and did nothing while students were hazed and at least one was sexually assaulted. Human Piñata Hazing Update: Coach, Players Turn Themselves Into Police, Parents Who Hosted Hazing Party Defend Boys - The allegations have rocked and divided the small Texas town of Flower Mound: high school wrestlers are accused of not only physically beating younger teammates at an annual team pool party, but now comes word that several put condoms on their fingers and sexually assaulted a teammate. (Details on the "human piñata" part of the hazing can be found below.) Yesterday former coach Charles Zascavage--who was in attendance at the party along and is accused of one count of hazing--and most of the 18 students accused of a variety of crimes turned themselves into police. On the other side you have parents George and Karen Grogan who threw the party and though they admit there was plenty of roughhousing, ball tossing and pool dunking, there was nothing, they said, that was close to hazing. The parents of the victims disagree and the grandmother of one alleged victim said that the older boys set up stations to initiate the freshmen, such as punching them and throwing footballs at their heads. (Set up stations?) Other parents still support the coach and the wrestlers and have demanded to meet with the superintendent. Maybe everyone involved needs to read my column called "Hazing, Not Hazing?" to learn the difference. Latest HS Hazing Horror: Teammates Turn Skinny Wrestler into "Human Piñata" at Pool Party - Imagine Gilligan being held up in the air by the Professor and Mr. Howell while the Skipper used him as a punching bag. That sounds pretty close to what may have happened to five new members on the Flower Mound High School (Texas) wrestling team who were allegedly hazed at a team party in late August. One boy was reportedly sexually assaulted and another sent to the emergency room as a result of his injuries. According to police, the hazing-- which took place at the home of one of the wrestlers with parents and coaches in attendance--included punches to the stomach, kicks to the groin and bloody backs that resulted from being scraped against the side of the pool. One unlucky freshman, all 115 lbs of him, was dunked underwater by several older upperclassmen then held up in the air by his arms and feet like a human piñata while others took turns punching him in the stomach. (Surprisingly, despite the repeated blows, no candy every fell out of him.) Said the victim's grandfather, "He got beat up pretty good. When he got home his mom saw what happened, how bruised he was, and took him to get checked. His physician saw him five days later and he was still bruised." Flower Mound's team, although only a few years old, won a state championship last year and was looking forward to another winning season this year . . . until now. Six adults, including a school official, and 13 juveniles will be charged as a result of the incident, with three of the minors suspected of aggravated sexual assault, a first-degree felony. Head coach Charles Zascavage--who was reportedly in attendance at the party--has been relieved of his duties but will continue to teach at the school. According to the school "appropriate personnel action" will be taken against the 16 students. Not surprisingly, parents of several of the attackers think their little boys are being "railroaded" and that nothing out of the ordinary happened at the party . . . despite the stunning photographic evidence. Said George Grogan, "I think the boys were fooling around. [I believe] they were being boys - slapping, pushing, shoving, jumping in the swimming pool and twisting each other. Unfortunately and regrettably, several of the boys got hurt." (Star Telegram, KVUE - includes video clip) 
BONUS: Read several letters to the editor of the Dallas Morning News, some in support of the Flower Mound team, and others appalled at the incident, including this sarcastic rant: The news that there had been hazing at Flower Mound High School was very welcome. And when I heard that a coach was involved, it just made my day. It's also excellent news that parents and teachers look at this with a blind eye. Every other school would have had upset teachers and parents, but not Flower Mound.

School Turns on Victim in HS Soccer Hazing - If you ever wondered why high school hazing incidents get out of hand so quickly, look no further than Salem, Massachusetts. Just this week, two former soccer players for Peabody High admitted--right before their trial was to begin--that there was enough evidence to convict them of crudely hazing the team's scorekeeper on a school bus last year. Their punishment? The judge ordered them to attend anti-bullying classes and write letters of apology. But this was only after other students have tormented the victim since he pressed criminal charges against his teammates, Jayson Pratt and John Serino. In a turn of events Judge O'Leary described as "perverse," schoolmates actually rallied around Pratt and Serino, wearing T-shirts that read "Stop the Madness" and "Save J and J." So what did these bullies do to their scorekeeper? On a team bus ride last year, one of the players accused dropped his shorts and rubbed his butt in the scorekeepers face. A second hazer also dropped his pants and waved his wiener in the victim's face. And the their hazer stuck his hand into his crotch, pulled it out and rubbed it on the victim's face. (Salem News)

New Hazing Horror: Canadian Football Players Strip Teammates, Threaten Their Backsides With Broomstick Handle Fondly Referred to as "Dr. Broom" - According to published reports, six first-string football players at Montreal's McGill University were suspended after a strange hazing incident earlier this month. The incident--which allegedly took place inside a squash court at the school--involved veteran athletes who forced rookies into removing their pants and threatening them with a broomstick referred to as "Dr. Broom." According to the Montreal Gazette, one veteran player has been suspended for the entire season and five others missed last weekend's game. At right, "Dr. Broom, I presume?" #142! Lady Cheerleading Coach Accused of Having Sex With Male High School Cheerleader - You read that headline correctly. Mishelle L. Robinson, 29, a coach at Northeast Ohio All-Stars and American Pro Cheer was arrested on sex allegations involving one of her 16-year-old male students. Robinson is listed as the head coach and choreographer of the junior elite and senior advanced teams at the center. (Canton Rep)

Coach/Gym Teacher at School for the Deaf Accused of Sex With Underage Girl - And how did cops catch Timothy Talbott, who until recently worked as a coach and gym teacher for the Rochester School for the Deaf? Apparently a resident in a Rochester neighborhood reported "suspicious behavior" to police back on Sept. 6 after seeing a man park on the street and walk through a back yard carrying a duffel bag. Hmmm. Then, according to police, more than two hours later, the same man (Talbott) returned to his car but wearing different clothing. When confronted by police who had staked the vehicle out, Talbott said he was visiting a family in the neighborhood; but all police found was the 15-year-old girl alone in her house. While admitting that the two had "mutual feelings" for one another, Talbott denied the two had intercourse. (Democrat and Chronicle)

EARLIER: Victim's Mother Planning to Sue School Over Son's Sexual Relationship With Gym Teacher Traci J. Tapp (HS Coach Sex Scandal #138) - We're not sure why this story from almost two weeks ago has suddenly attracted a lot of traffic to this site (other than the fact that The Drudge Report linked to it Monday) but there is an update. As you'll recall Trapp, a hot young gym teacher at Hammonton High School in New Jersey, is accused of having sex with at least three underage boys. Her arrest is not enough however, for the mother of one of the victims, Jason Eickmeyer. Tina Eickmeyer announced last week that she is planning on suing the school claiming that several of its employees--including the principal--knew of the relationship but failed to properly report it. Her suit also claims that one school official who knew of the relationship not only failed to act, but actually harassed young Jason about the alleged sex with Tapp. And, to top things off, the suit also claims that "Jason Eickmeyer and his mother, Tina, have incurred numerous physical and emotional injuries as a result of the actions and/or inactions of the entities and employees named in the notice." HS Football Game Postponed After Player's Father Threatens Coach - It's not the first time a parent has gotten angry and threatened to kill a coach, but it's the first time we can remember a game being postponed because of it. According to police, Robert Stanel's son, who played football for Parsippany High School, was five minutes late for the team bus on Saturday for their game against West Essex. The coach, Gerry Moore, decided to bench the boy for being late which upset Stanel, who reportedly threatened Moore, saying, "I'm going to ... kill you. ... I'll be coming back for you." For his part, Stanel claims he didn't really threaten to kill the coach,  explaining calmly that, "I work construction. This is just the way we talk. It's a wake-up call." The coaching staff didn't think so and immediately called police who went looking for Stanel and couldn't immediately find him, so the football game between the two schools was postponed until the next day. Eventually Stanel turned himself into police and was charged with making a terroristic threat. By the way, Parsippany lost the game 41-14. (Daily Record)

Brent Musburger Ticketed for Drinking in Car - Fortunately for Brent he wasn't driving after the Pittsburgh /Nebraska football game on Saturday, but he must have needed a drink badly because he had an open beer in his rental car. A cop directing traffic after the game spotted the brew in the ABC sportscaster's hand and pulled the car over. Despite the fact that  witnesses claim other passengers in the car also had alcohol, Musburger was ticketed and given a $144 citation, including court costs. (Omaha Channel)

Kansas State Football Star Arrested for Trying to Run Over Parking Attendant - I suppose when you're the nation's leading rusher parking tickets just aren't that important to you. So you can understand why Kansas State running back Thomas Clayton may not have wanted to stick around when a university parking services employee phoned in for a wheel lock to be delivered to prevent the football star from leaving. Seems Mr. Clayton had a buttload of unpaid parking tickets and was about to receive one more when he decided not to stick around. According to the parking cop, Clayton tried to run him over as he left which is why he was arrested for aggravated battery. No one was hurt in the incident and Clayton remains free on bond. Ohio Man Stabbed for Boasting of Being a Buckeye Fan - The football season hasn't been the greatest so far for Ohio State University, but that doesn't keep loyal fans from boasting about their team. Take this Fairborn, Ohio man who stopped to have breakfast at a local Waffle House when he overheard a woman at a nearby table talking about the Buckeyes so he chimed in that he admired the team. When he walked out to his car later, he was approached by another man in his 20s, who said, "So you like Ohio State?" After answering yes, he was slashed across his abdomen and received a four-inch cut. The wound was not life-threatening, and police have several witnesses to the attack and are searching for the suspect. (NBC4i) Thanks to Craig Friedman for the link!

HS Coach Sex Scandal Update: Coach #126 Accused of Secretly Videotaping Girls Also Accused of Sexual Assault - In August we reported on Daniel Shields, Jr., a HS coach accused of secretly videotaping girls in the locker room as they changed. Not police say he will be facing additional charges of sexual assault for molesting a former member of the school's track team. Police also revealed Shields trick for concealing the video camera: he put it in a clothes dryer in a training room near his school office, told students the dryer was out of order and put a sign reading "Do not touch" on it. #140! HS Coach Sex Scandal in BadJocks Backyard - Hey! We know right were Sexton High School is in Lansing, Michigan. It's where gym teacher John Daniel "J.D." Ross, 52, allegedly sexually assaulted a female student last May 10, according to court records. Ross is charged with one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, which involves digital penetration. (State Journal)
Back in Jail: HS Coach Sex Scandal #125 Update - George Barber, a suspended Las Cruces High School teacher and coach accused of having a sexual relationship with a student was rearrested this week on a charge of trying to bribe or intimidate his alleged victim. According to the girl, first Barber offered to supply her with a cell phone so the two could communicate--a clear violation of his probation. There is also an issue of some vague threats that may have been made which had something to do with the amount of firearms stored in Barber's home: a judge has also ordered that “many” of those guns be confiscated by police “for safety purposes.” Barber is the guy accused of having sex as many as 10 times with a 17-year-old girl, including several times in his office at the school and at once at his house when his wife and children were away at church. Update to 2004's #179: Guilty and Going to Jail! - Scott Borum, 24, a former cheerleading coach from Cobb County, Georgia received a 15-year prison sentence after his conviction on charges he molested young girls he coached at the Fantasy All Stars cheer team at Georgia Cheerleading Academy. (WXIA)
