Former Cops Sentenced to Two Years for Embezzling from Youth Sports Leagues

No clear totals on how much this guy skimmed, but part of the story says that "revenues collected from the concessions stand at league events dropped from as much as $35,000 to less than $10,000 during the years Porras was collecting the money." You'd think someone else looking over the books would have noticed that, wouldn't you?

Former Lake County Sheriff's officer Robert Porras will serve two years in jail for embezzling money from the Lowell youth baseball and football leagues. Porras on Wednesday entered a plea agreement with prosecutors and was sentenced by Judge Diane Boswell, ending a saga that began in 2003 when Porras became treasurer of the South Lake County youth football league, and began making small cash withdrawals from the league's accounts.

Over a three-year period, Porras would eventually become treasurer of little league baseball, and would use money from the two leagues to pay for trips to Mexico and a deposit on a diamond engagement ring, among other things. Porras shifted money from the accounts of each league to cover the theft.
